NZGames does the Summer Soundtrack
You know that Telecom ad with Che Fu? Where he emails that song around and all them musicians add a little something and pass it on? Well, Simon and I were chatting a coupla nights ago, and together we came up with a similar idea for all of us musicians here at NZGames. The idea is that we pick a theme, then all of us write a song that fits the theme, and at the end of it we'll have a hugely diverse compilation of songs that kinda fit together. In addition, a few suggestions for song titles will be supplied to help the creative process.
One song from each person / band. Doesn't have to be a masterpiece. Hell, it could be good for some of us to compose a song about something we normally wouldn't write about. So without further adu, the theme is: Here's some suggested song titles: - The Summer That Died - Sand Gets In Your Butt-Crack - I Butt-Banged A Drunken Slut At Piha On New Year's Eve - My Dandruff Helped Make This A White Christmas - Hayfever Blues - Law Breakin' n' a'Whinin' (for that nzgames connection) - I Once Knew A Boy Named Summer, He Was Weird. - Summer Is To Blame For Everything (from Googlism =) There it is, have fun, and I look forward to hearing what all of you come up with. |

Why don't for the music you do what che fu does in the ad and get all the musicians to do a 20 - 30 sec piece of music and post the results here?

Do you think it would be helpful to set a tempo, then write around that? Just for integrations sake...

Nonono, we're all writing individual songs, to a similar theme. It's the composer's freedom to make whatever they want. But with Summer in mind, it might turn out that we all put the songs together and come up with an album of songs that fit well together.

Already working on mine
At first I tended towards one-word suggestions for song titles, because I figured that gave each contributor the maximum possible range of possibilities -- I was thinking of stuff like "Sand", "Sunburn", "Cold Ones" -- but you know, the more we threw ideas around, the later it got, the sillier the ideas got Seriously though, to everyone who wants to contribute, just come up with something musical with a theme of "Summer". It'll be cool. |

achoooooo
I'll start on mine tonight. I'm thinking something like "5 day drinking binge ends badly", although I do like the "hayfever blues" suggestion.

Good, now that you're suicidal, write a song about it. You can call it "Self-pwned"

Well, yes wizardofOz, that's fine... But that isnt exactly the purpose of this thing we are embarking on. The challenge is to try and make something that suites a theme. To compose outside your comfort zone.
Give it a go, play around with something with this theme in mind. You liked Hayfever Blues... think about a way to soundtrack hayfever. It's a worthy challenge, no? What kind of rhythm suits hayfever? Does the melody flow like your snot, or jump around like your random sneezing? Last edited by Jonas Undrawing : 8th January 2004 at 17:18. |

Here's cEvin's wonderful contribution. Dig it. No prizes for being the fastest songwriter, I'm afraid.

Hmmm.
I might have to drag out the trusty of soft-synths and sequencers and through something together then. Cover your ears ladies. This is gonna get unpleasant...

Heres my song
I started off trying to do something with the nzg summer theme, but that theme gradually dissipated away and I just wanted to jam with the harp. No words to this piece, it's very mellow with just guitar and the old harmonica, both of which I have taught myself to play and am still not very good at - only got my harp a week ago [edit] oh yes a link would be helpful too http://dteam.orcon.net.nz/harmonica.mp3 - 3.08mb and 3 mins 22 secs long Last edited by tarzan007 : 10th January 2004 at 00:51. |
