Can't remember where I read it, but someone/some people had the opinion that the show runners were great at adaptation of existing material, but horrible at original content, and that really makes sense - as soon as the show made it past the books, it all fell apart.

It's almost as if GRRM said "hey, these are the major plot beats and here's the end" and they literally just did that, without weaving in minor plot threads and nuance/context and just ramming it in dry.
