IIRC the ruling was the Samsung had blatantly infringed on Apple's patents for design and function and thus Apple was the "winner" of the suit; however after multiple appeals the damages awarded were slashed to hundred-something-million dollars - i.e. peanuts, and not enough to deter an ambitious phone manufacturer from copying Apple as hard as it can.
Hence why Xiaomi.
