No problem - it's literally sitting round here not doing anything (which seems a shame). But your plan sounds smart - and the electronic kits these days are pretty damn close to the real thing in response, easy to record with (and have backing tracks to jam with) and certainly not least on the list, QUIET!
The pad should do for the moment if he has access to kit through school / community too - getting that fine hand control early on makes drumming much more enjoyable.
