GPRS, rather than EDGE? I'm probably missing the issue, but to turn EDGE off (which is definitely important), I installed iToggle, and the BSD subsystem (or something else that provides unix tools, which iToggle relies upon). It still sometimes randomly turns EDGE back on, I have to check it often...
