Indeed, I'm all for expanding the rail network. It was at its peak in 1953, I think. Then the line closures started.
I wonder how much it would cost these days to build a line from Blenheim over the hill to Nelson? Or to reinstate the central Otago line, even all the way to Queenstown? Too much, probably
