I'm forgiving for his n-word use as it does seem to be in context (not planet of apes comment that was terrible) AND historical. The rules have changed since then and so he's being judged on had he said it now.
However there are people of colour who find the context and delivery offensive despite being historical and it's not my place to tell them how they should feel about n-word use.
