One of the arguments that resonated was the social cost of say, firing workers to replace with automation (depression, anger, perhaps even violence, in reality, probably welfare until they accept a lower paying job just to get off welfare) is potentially larger than the profit gained by shareholders, but the corporation doesn't have to pay for it, so it's still profitable.
