I think the midterms are the next big test. If the Democrats lose the House, then that's the end of the probe, the stage will be set for the next attempt.

While Trump has the habit of spewing out stuff he shouldn't when under pressure, sometimes it's also just utter meaningless word-salad.

I think the committee are hoping for the former.
