I believe the wiki answer is avoiding detail because the question doesn't imply that it should go into specifics. Nonetheless, even if the answer isn't strictly correct in that it doesn't provide a break down of the chemical compositions and provide flow charts, the idea that perhaps the black smoke is result of fuel being burned as opposed to say - a mysterious atmospheric condition, is more likely to be correct.
