I think of it the other way around. Scientific knowledge was immunising enough of the population that we had intellectual herd immunity. Each stupid person was insulated by several layers of educated people from any other stupid person. Then social media gave every stupid person a direct line to every other one. We connected enough of the stupid people that we lost herd immunity, and now we're sick.
