Absolutely. We're in the early adopter phase. Very early. Although, I would scratch out the "currency" part of your question.

I put together a document for a friend of mine summarising the blockchain landscape about a year ago. It's written to be understandable over accurate, but it's more than good enough. Some of the transaction cost/speed data is no longer accurate, but it still gives an idea of the important differences.
