Hi Ab,
As someone who suffers from chronic illness, I can tell you that the level of dismissal, discrimination, and gaslighting in the medical industry is an epidemic and it severely hurts people who have a symptomology that goes beyond the acute and requires a medical professional to actually THINK.

So there are millions of people who struggle terribly every day, worse than those with DIAGNOSED chronic illnesses, because they cannot get an official diagnosis - and so not only are very ill, but also suffer gaslighting and a terrible betrayal of trust from those who should be helping them, and are excluded from official support or recognition.

I believe the self-identify clause is aimed at those people.

Note that something like long COVID would be in this camp if it wasn't backed up by the sheer numbers of people reporting it all at once.
There are lots of post-viral and other type chronic illnesses that have been swept under the rug by the medical profession, blamed on 'depression', 'diet', 'anxiety' for decades, purely because it's easer for professionals to sweep them under the rug, minimise the symptoms, refer to mental health when it is only a single case rather than a wave of cases.
