Yep the the South Africa situation seems very complex with a lot of conflicting reports from both sides. It comes back to whether what's going on results in the widespread oppression of white South Africans. It does get murky with reverse discrimination as when you're redressing historical grievances then it's necessary that the group who benefited greatly from this has some of their power & wealth removed. Looking at the stats it still looks like white South Africans are very much at the top. You mention poor whites which is a good point as although they have access to white jobs & privilege they don't have that financial buffer.
Also with the farmer killings any racial motivations aren't clear cut either. There's over 21000 murders and hundreds of thousands of robberies per year and white farmers are the victims in around half a percent of those murders.
