Some kind of arbitrary respect because you shared part of your personal life is ridiculous.
Surely you were aware that there may have been negative consequences to revealing personal information, it is likely you decided that the positive benefit of your actions outweighed the possible risk, and that's FANTASTIC and honourable and I'm not contending that, but I don't see how you can claim a negative response isn't fair.
