The Daily Show did have good content, and it wasn't polished, and yeah maybe it was genuine response to a world gone mad after 9/11. People did start going to Stewart for "unfiltered" news, which is probably the point where lightbulbs went on above a few TV execs heads. In a way, comedians have a way of removing all the noise and telling it how it is (ie Bill Burr)

Remember when Obama got elected? Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart were on air when it was announced that he won. They were in tears thinking it was the dawn of a better world. Then in the first week of the Daily Show after Obama got in, Jon Stewart was saying "I don't know how we can keep this show going with Obama as our president. There's no jokes."

And there it is. Obama was the untouchable darling who kept guantanamo open, loved drone warfare, wanted stricter policies on illegal immigrants, etc etc etc. Well, there's definitely no jokes there when the realisation sets in that it doesn't matter who you vote for, you get the same result.
