An asylum seeker is someone who seeks visa-less entry into the country by being legally classified as a refugee. The term would make more sense if it were "refugee-status seeker" but yeah.
Key point: it's not illegal, and Australia is a signatory to numerous UN conventions that require it to treat asylum-seekers humanely. But, you know, election time and I am not a racist but gotta keep the darkies out mate, dey tuk er jerb oi oi oi.
