Just talking about this game with a friend. We didn't know how good we had it. It was such a good balance of cool space sim shooter, with high playability (as opposed to borderline qualifying as a genuine fighter pilot to be able to play).
What has even come close since?
Elite Dangerous is legit, but it's a bit more hardcore.
