It's not thought-provoking, it's simple common sense. But both major Australian parties have given up on common sense because winning the election depends on appealing to a small subset of swing voters in marginal electorates. Polling shows those voters are not motivated by common sense, they're motivated by a desire to keep the fucking darkies out mate. Thus both parties will be running on a platform of "we're more inhumane to refugees than the other party".
