Yeh I took a defensive driving course in order to get my full license before the new licensing laws came into effect. I find it quite helpful, mainly for the 'searching up ahead' aspect that was taught.. like when theres some bus parked up around the corner and you can barely see it so you change lanes and everyone else in front of you is just looking straight ahead and not searching and then they end up getting stuck behind this bus and having to wait while you drive past and laugh.. :-)
