Watching that clip Affleck gets a bit heated but he’s not wrong in what he’s getting at.

When people with the power to influence communicate they have a responsibility to do so in a way that considers privilege and avoids negative stereotypes. When criticising Islam they need to be crystal clear to ensure that the narrative is the extremist minority and not mainstream Islam. Why? Because privilege. Christians for example are privileged in that their fringe can be criticised without it negatively affecting/perpetuating views about Christians in general and how they participate in society. Islam doesn’t have this privilege and so often all Muslims are blamed and from this cop the negative consequences that come from living in a society where people often think like this.

So to link back to cancel culture, prominent people who fail to acknowledge the ideological distinctions between a faith of 1.8 billion and a militant fringe are literally attacking mainstream Muslims and cancel culture is a reaction to this.
