Only way an LBQT+ candidate is going to get into power is by not frightening the old white men in charge too much. If Buttigieg was more representative of the wider LBQT community it would make him ineligible in the eyes of anyone with money (= power = ability to impose their will).

That being said, even if it wasn't Buttigieg, who could be good enough? As relatively small as it is, the various paths leading people to their LBQT+ sexuality are so varied that expecting a single candidate to represent them (especially on a platform based around the person's sexuality rather than their actual policies) seems 1) infantile and 2) impossible.
