What's your electoral-vote preference? (Nov edition)

Yeah yeah.

CCS 4th November 2008 16:34

Is this a write in vote?

CCS 4th November 2008 16:43

YAY! We have votings now!

Let it be known that I'm only voting for John Key because I have no fucking clue about anyone else standing in my electorate. I haven't really even noticed any billboards either. WTF?

crocos 4th November 2008 16:47

Bill & Ben all the way!

IF I vote (undecided if I will) it'd likely be for National for electorate

Ritalin 4th November 2008 17:01

I chose abstention, not because I'm lazy, or apathetic, but because I just have no faith in any of the political parties or their leaders.

In fact I really really want to vote, I just don't feel there's anyone to vote for. :(

Torka 4th November 2008 17:02

I chose abstention because I'm lazy and apathetic.

Ritalin 4th November 2008 17:03

Heh, that's OK too. :)

Saladin 4th November 2008 17:26

Electorate vote's definitely going to a joke candidate, since I think it's meaningless :)

Ab 4th November 2008 17:41

^^^ um what?

-Dr.J- 4th November 2008 17:47

Meaningless isn't the right word to use in an election thread

CCS 4th November 2008 17:55

I guess Saladin isn't too fussed about who represents his area of the country in parliament :/

Saladin 4th November 2008 18:22

I don't live in Epsom, Tauranga, Ohariu-Belmot or Wigram and I'm not on the Maori roll. My electorate vote has absolutely no bearing on the make-up of government at all, that's all done by the proportional section of the vote - the only real difference is if number 52 makes it in for National, or number 60 (the nat mp for my area) bumps them off.

Though Nat's no 52 has a cute name, same as that girl in Talladega Nights, so maybe I should vote to keep Franks out.

CCS 4th November 2008 18:45

Like I said, I guess you're not too fussed about who represents your area of the country in parliament...

flic 4th November 2008 22:38

The Labour candidate in my electorate is the only candidate that has made an effort to get my vote.

A personalised letter "Respectfully asking for your vote on election day"

I've heard nought from the rest of them.

The incumbent is not the same Labour candidate but is a Labour representative.

Is that what they call themselves now? I'm still catching up with "Friend of Dorothy".

Ms Dalziel sent door knockers around last week, and stood outside the pub and spoke to the masses (by that I mean one timid woman who stayed four houses back) - she ended up coming into the pub to say "Hello" to the four of us that didn't hide in the pokie room, then drove off in her token selfdrive Hybrid - token because it was covered in cobwebs - I don't think it gets out much.

It's not really enough to sway me to the red side, although she is in a pretty safe seat, so her majority will be interesting.

Rince 4th November 2008 23:04

fuck I don't know - if I thought someone had a chance of ousting Dunne, then fine, but it ain't going to happen.... but then he's said he'd back National, which is where my party vote is going, so......

Really? What the fuck does he do for the Ohariu? I thought old Skanks had made more of an effort this year. I'm pretty reluctant to vote national for party, but they might get my Electoral Vote.

Haven't heard jack shit from the rest of them. In actual fact, the most campaigning in general seems to be coming from the Greens, but Welly Central has traditionally been quite symapathetic to them. Bloody students!

For anyone that is interested - they'll be interviewing candidates on Active between 8-9 every morning up to the election. They had the ACT rep on this morning, and that was quite interesting (she did a helluva lot better than I thought she would) and the Kiwi party, although I didn't hear them (nor did care to).

-Statik 4th November 2008 23:46

voting for simon bridges (national) in tauranga to help stop winston getting in.

undecided on the party vote, they're all terrible.

fidgit 5th November 2008 00:16

Didn't make it to the Hutt South 'meet the candidates' thing tonight, but if Trevor Mallard doesn't re-win Hutt South, something's gone terribly wrong with the countries stereotypes.

The posters near me for National are all just John Key's face wanting my party vote, no mention of wanting the electorate. I guess everyone else isn't bothering contesting.

The Greens however have been doing maaaad campaigning. Many times I've had pamphlets thrust at me by supporters at the Train station, and every 3rd bus seems to have an ad for them. No other party seems to be trying to do anything beyond mailing me stuff.

edit-
Statik, vote for the Bill and Ben party then. It's this years "I think you're all fucking idiots" party.

in fact you are right - seen her signs over all the place.... PD is getting complacent, me thinks

Macca@Work 5th November 2008 10:22

National.

Northcote

The Green candidate came knock on my door and talked about the Green party and... nothing else. They probably use the electorate candidate to gain exposure.

The Labour candidate organized a meeting on our street and I didn't go because I got better things to do (like playing Fallout 3, wait did I say that out loud?). I have no idea if he talked about local issues but I heard the turnout is ok. That guy only cares because the election is coming, not because he is involved in the community. It is a trend that the party just airlift some nobody from nowhere and expect me to vote for him/her.

The incumbent National MP sent a letter saying pretty much zero about his achievement as a local MP. Either he conveniently forget to boast his record, or he is not as competent local MP as he thinks he is.

As far as I can see, local MP should understand local issues and represent our electorate in parliament. So far no one actually presented reason for me to vote for him/her for THAT particular purpose.

CCS 5th November 2008 14:57

If a Green supporter came knocking on my door, I'd have to chuck a handful of GE grain at them. I assume it's like holy water to a vampire.

Mickey 5th November 2008 16:34

We had a Green flag waver come to our house and they asked me what I was doing to preserve the environment. I mean really, he wants my vote not the other way around so why was I getting the third degree?
I told them I had cut my power bill by 100%, I thought he was going to ejaculate on the spot. He asked how. I told him our power box died and it took the power company over a month to fix and we didn't get a bill for it. Therefore saving 100%.

I think I made him cry.

ChaosWulf 5th November 2008 16:47

You see, that would make me say to him, "I was considering voting Greens, but congratulations, your attitude has put paid to that, kindly fuck off."

Electorate: Rongotai
Incumbent: Annette King, Labour, running again.

Amusingly enough though, the Green candidate is the only one of the folks from my area that I've actually met. Seems like a nice enough bloke, but his party's attitudes & policies are a little too out there for my tastes.

No: Regardless of if I have taken steps to "reduce my carbon footprint" or something more relevant like reducing the amount of trash I produce, if they're wanting my vote you don't get to interrogate me; I get to interrogate you.

I'd counter and ask what they're going to-do to preserve our economy and raise our standard of living.

JiggaRoll 6th November 2008 10:58

I'm on the maori role in Ikaroa-Rawhiti and basically have 2 people to choose from. The labour rep is number 4 on the party list so gets in no matter what.

Thinking about voting for the Maori party candidate, that way I might end up with 3 people in parliament for my electorate and hopefully one of them will be useful.

StN 6th November 2008 11:10

I really wanted to ask Lianne what she was doing to stop a middle aged whitey like me from upping stakes and moving to Oz, seeing as I don't and haven't qualified for any handout in the last 9 years except maybe reduced doctors fees, which is a Southern Cross money-go-round anyway. But my elderly mate had issues with pension backpay, so I let him go for it.

xor 6th November 2008 14:25

^^What is stopping you then?

I'm in the Mangere electorate and I think the area has been getting better over the years.

Labour for the sly dawgs on the pee's

Probably just letting the grandparents see the kids grow up. I have siblings offshore, and the olds don't travel well. Only a matter of time I suppose.

I voted for phil heatley 'cause i bitched at him when he was in his little campaigning booth about snakehill road improvements, he said that he supports such improvements and said by the sound of it i was doing a thorough job. I popped a small bit of wood at that.
