Was John Key anywhere near Turkey? If so, it might be his fault.

CCS 16th July 2016 22:31

I blame TPP.

cyc 16th July 2016 22:55

Oh fuck off, it's the National Party's fault!

Awww, poor cyc. People on the internets see things differently to him! Oh, what to do! lolz

Lightspeed 17th July 2016 13:44

Interesting analysis:

Turkey's coup may have failed – but history shows that it won’t be long before another one succeeds

A+

Nothing 18th July 2016 16:59

I've been reading this book recently:

The Next 100 Years by George Friedman, who forecasts Turkey and Japan to start WW4 in 2050. Interesting read.

In other words the administration was able to survive because of the existence of internet messaging tools despite the administration's attempts to stamp out internet messaging tools?

I, too, had this thought.

They should have learnt from Thailand's coup and just killed power to the major citys to turn off the internet.

Nice link, FF said it had an invalid cert. lol.

Anyway, the problems with all those types of apps is that they require everyone to have one installed. Most people have twitter/insta/facebook installed, not all will have something like open garden.

Lightspeed 19th July 2016 16:47

There's been no shortage of commentary suggesting the whole thing could have been staged as pretext for a crackdown.

[Malks] Pixie 19th July 2016 16:55

This is always worth remembering about the role of the military in turkey...

Quote:

However, after the coups d'état in 1960, the Millî Birlik Komitesi (National Unity Committee) established the Inner Service Act of the Turkish Armed Forces on 4 January 1961 to legitimize their military interventions in politics. In subsequent coup d'états and coup d'état attempts, they showed reasons to justify their political activities especially with the article 35 and 85 of this act.

The Turkish military perceived itself as the guardian of Kemalist ideology, the official state ideology, especially of the secular aspects of Kemalism. The TAF still maintains an important degree of influence over the decision making process regarding issues related to Turkish national security, albeit decreased in the past decades, via the National Security Council.

So what? It's more to make a point that "killing the Internet" isn't enough to suppress an uprising as proven by the Hong Kong riots.

Ok, fair enuff. Point taken.

Lightspeed 22nd July 2016 14:48

It's fucking scary in Turkey right now. Hearing the president in a live interview talking about how they're questioning those they've arrested and how confident he is they'll get more names of people to arrest and question gave me chills.

I can't see Erdogan ever surrendering power peacefully.

One of the few times I totally agree with Lightspeed. The purges are very Stalinist :(

Lightspeed 17th June 2017 23:25

Turkish government destroys iconic Anzac monument at Gallipoli

Fucking bullshit.
