u mad?

A Corpse 10th May 2011 12:38

320mhash is pretty fast, what GPU are you using? I only got 70mhash out of my 4850. I wouldn't consider anything faster to be spare scrap. :D

edit: 6950 I see. That's a $400 video card, and you're not using it for anything else? You'd have to be pretty lucky to make that back, let alone other hardware costs and power.

Yup. You're right. It's a risk I'm taking, with the hope that if the difficulty gets to such a degree that I'm mining next to nothing, I'll pull the card out and sell it on trademe. Hopefully the loss is made up from the coins I have generated.

Ajax 10th May 2011 15:10

Bwahaha, what the hell is this nickle-and-dime shit, seriously.

A Corpse 10th May 2011 16:13

Wonder if you can rent cloud GPU time somewhere to do this viably? :D

Sarge 10th May 2011 18:33

Bought a 2nd hand 5870 and selling my GTX 460 since it's slow as.
Pretty cheap to upgrade, using an old PC with a true 400W PSU as well so hoping it can run the 5870 - runs the GTX 460 fine heh.

crocos 10th May 2011 18:40

GTX460 - how much you wanting for it?

It'd have to be a step up from the 8800GTS I'm rocking at the moment ^_^'

Sarge 10th May 2011 18:44

TradeMe around $250?, hardly been used was supposed to rock SC2 with it.
Message me at work could sell to ya

Jodi 11th May 2011 06:19

1) Slush wasn't stealing - was a cascaded HW failure or a targeted DDOS attack.
2) Yes someone has investigated using the cloud to do bitcoin mining. But because they all use nVidia, cost == 5 * reward. So it's pointless ATM.
3) 5870 has the same mining speed as a 6950. Miners love these cards.
4) Difficulty just went up 50%. Due to go up again in another 11 days. This is the only real reason you'll never pay back your HW.
5) However the exchange rate just jumped from 3.2 USD / btc to 5 USD / btc. I'm xing fingers the bubble won't burst before I've sold my coins.
6) Or you could speculate that it won't and just buy and sell btc. Lots of money to be made if it keeps going up.

Sarge 11th May 2011 22:31

Think this 400W psu I have won't cut the mustard for the 5870 damn have to upgrade ;( it ran my GTX 460 fine. Get around 360 mhash with the 5870 for a bit.

The 5870 will draw 16A on the 12v rail. So make sure your PSU can supply at least 20A.

Sarge 12th May 2011 07:20

Ran fine overnight no crashes or anything ... think the issue was with ATI overdrive was enabled and so it was OCing the card on the fly. Just left it on defaults and it's perfectly fine.

Juju 12th May 2011 09:49

Mtgox hit over $6US overnight.

this bubble hasn't burst yet....

Sarge 12th May 2011 11:57

Might build a PC at work and have it running 24/7 hehe ;)

Juju 12th May 2011 15:30

Wow... it's a fucken mission for non americans (And esp NZ'ers) to convert bitcoins to cash and vise versa. Especially now that paypal isn't accepted much.

Any protips?

I'm sure there's more than enough spare CPU cycles on the ESX cluster...

Need GPU so might put it in my test lab and run it 24/7 ...

crocos 12th May 2011 17:17

So that mean you're not selling me the GTX 460 then? :p

Sarge 12th May 2011 17:30

I sold the GTX 460 as it sucked for Bitcoins ... plus I don't game so much.

Found an NZ site that accepts NZ bank payments in exchange for liberty reserve.

www.webmoney.co.nz

Jodi 13th May 2011 11:54

Problem is all the bloody fees involved.

Let's say you sell 10 btc for 6 usd on mt gox

trade fee: 0.65% = 0.39c usd ($59.61)
withdraw fee to liberty reserve: mt gox: 1% = 60c usd ($59.01)
withdraw fee to liberty reserve: libert reserve: 1% = 59c usd ($58.42)
curreny conversion (current - 1c = * 1.24) = 72.44 NZD
bank account xfer webmoney: 3% or $10usd: ~$12.50
money in account: 59.95 NZD (fees: 15.05 usd, NZD)

via otc 10 btc @ 6usd = 10 btc @ 7.5 NZD = $75 NZD

Fees eat 20% of your money. Ugh.

nube: i'm getting 4500 khash/s but no coins after ~ 2 days ... do i need to wait more?

A Corpse 16th May 2011 19:44

Use a GPU. CPU is a waste of time. Even 70Mhash from my GPU is expected to take what, 2 months to "solve" a block (50 coins), on average (it's a bit of a lottery).

MadMax 16th May 2011 20:51

afaikt it is ... when running i can hear the fan on my 4850 spin up and cpu usage is 0

A Corpse 16th May 2011 21:08

No, that's definitely a CPU-level rating.

Use GuiMiner, it can use CPU and GPU.

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison

The 4850 should be getting at least 70,000 khash.

Unless you are mining at at least 1GHash, use pool mining like slush's or deepbit.

1.2 GHash = 2x6990, or 4x6950

12) Bring PC to work. No keyboard/mouse/monitor installed so setup RDP. RDP into it and video card can't see GPU - great. I guess cause no monitor is plugged in. Go out to Jaycar to buy resistors and plug to make a dummy plug. Plug it in, still can't see GPU. Ffffffffffffff.

DrTiTus 12th June 2011 09:18

Bitcoin loses 1/3 of its value in 24 hours

http://www.dailytech.com/Digital+Bla...ticle21877.htm

It does bounce back a little, but it's a bit of a funny currency to me still.

I can see bitcoin gaining some popularity, until the point some big company that buys/sells them gets done for money laundering...

Pffft, what was that urban legened? Every USD $20 note has traces of cocaine on it?
I would be more scared if the illegal drug trade wasn't using the currency, as that would mean no one had confidence in it.

Oh wait, money laundering? Yea, same point as above. Would be scared if no one was doing it.
