Now the battle to give gay people the legal right to love who they want has been won in most countries, activists have moved to the next battle: forcing gays to have sex with people against their will

If you're not attracted to that person's vagina, even though you're a gay man, that's DISCRIMINATION and TRANSPHOBIA.

Cyberbob 29th June 2020 08:58

So if you're a gay man, and don't want to date a gay man that used to be a woman, you're transphobic, but if you specifically do, you're fetishising.

Ab 29th June 2020 14:08

There’s no such thing as biological sex so if you call yourself “same-sex-attracted” you’re a transphobe committing a hate crime

Cyberbob 29th June 2020 14:59

That's so gay.

York Minster's Roman Emperor statue being 'looked at' following complaints

York Minster has received complaints that the Emperor also supported slavery in Roman times.

The statue commemorates the accession of Constantine as Roman Emperor in AD 306 at York and is testament to the leader who declared an end to the persecution of Christians.

Let there be no mistake - any claim that an employer is not providing a safe workplace is a threat of legal action. This is what a passive-aggressive demand for someone's career to be ended looks like. Because he signed a letter upholding freedom of speech.

The reason why we don't see small/young/job-insecure people complaining about cancel culture is because they cant afford to be cancelled. it'd destroy their lives. So they've been silenced.

People who fear for their livelihoods can't and don't take the risk. Or they do and get cancelled.

fixed_truth 15th July 2020 18:02

I think that cancel culture is mostly focused on people with a prominent public platform because of their platform and the power that this wields.

Also if people are keeping quiet then it’s difficult to substantiate if a significant number of insignificant people are scared of being cancelled. And even if they are then it’s good that they're deterred to engage in harmful behaviour.

A lot of the use of the term ‘cancel culture’ is thrown out by people not used to facing consequences for their actions as a way to delegitimise any type of criticism towards them.

Nich 15th July 2020 20:42

Respectfully disagree.

Although I agree it is about power. I see it as amplifying the oppressor/oppressed narrative so a vast imbalance illusion is painted and balance must be restored by any means necessary. It reads the headline and knows all it needs to know about a person. It's attack dogs are people who think similarly to roided up Ben Affleck when he snapped at Sam Harris for being "racist" and "gross".

Here's the clip.
https://youtu.be/vln9D81eO60

The scary part is that I see myself in Ben Affleck here. My compassionate intuitive brain tells me that Sam Harris is a fucking xenophobe bigot! He must be stopped! To reassess my default position takes effort, and my brain is designed to conserve energy and go with its gut feel.

Granted, sometimes it finds a worthy target: An actual Nazi, a Harvey Weinstein, or white supremacist. But you have to admit the definition of "problematic person" get pretty loose when someone like Bret Weinstein is hunted across a university campus by people with baseball bats.

fixed_truth 16th July 2020 07:07

Watching that clip Affleck gets a bit heated but he’s not wrong in what he’s getting at.

When people with the power to influence communicate they have a responsibility to do so in a way that considers privilege and avoids negative stereotypes. When criticising Islam they need to be crystal clear to ensure that the narrative is the extremist minority and not mainstream Islam. Why? Because privilege. Christians for example are privileged in that their fringe can be criticised without it negatively affecting/perpetuating views about Christians in general and how they participate in society. Islam doesn’t have this privilege and so often all Muslims are blamed and from this cop the negative consequences that come from living in a society where people often think like this.

So to link back to cancel culture, prominent people who fail to acknowledge the ideological distinctions between a faith of 1.8 billion and a militant fringe are literally attacking mainstream Muslims and cancel culture is a reaction to this.

Reza Aslan: Bill Maher 'not very sophisticated'

Nich 16th July 2020 10:06

no argument from me that Bill Maher is not sophisticated. He is atheism for viewers of South Park.

Ben Affleck attacking Sam Harris is a perfect example of refusing to understand someone's efforts, achievements, and intentions but smearing them anyway to collect the virtue points.

Andrew Sullivan is an HIV-positive gay man, a vocal anti-Trump activist, and is quite possibly the very first mainstream columnist to (in 1989) call for legislation extending the right of marriage to same-sex couples. At the time he was excoriated as an extreme leftist.

Of course he has just been driven from New York Magazine/Vox as an unperson:

Quote:

A critical mass of the staff and management at New York Magazine and Vox Media no longer want to associate with me, and, in a time of ever tightening budgets, I’m a luxury item they don’t want to afford. And that’s entirely their prerogative. They seem to believe, and this is increasingly the orthodoxy in mainstream media, that any writer not actively committed to critical theory in questions of race, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity is actively, physically harming co-workers merely by existing in the same virtual space.

Libby Schaaf, the white mayor of Oakland, California, announced that ropes had been found hanging from trees around a local lake. “These incidents will be investigated as a hate crime,” she said at a press conference. “I want to be clear, regardless of the intentions of whoever put those nooses in our public trees, in our sacred public space here in Oakland, intentions don’t matter.”

An investigation revealed that the five ropes had nothing to do with lynching: They were homemade exercise equipment, used by adults and children, put up months earlier by a black resident, Victor Sengbe. He explained his intent at a press conference: “It was really a fun addition to the park.”

But this happy conclusion was of no interest to Schaaf. The actual purpose of the ropes did not “remove nor excuse their torturous and terrorizing effects,” she said in a statement, and the incident would continue to be investigated as a hate crime.

Auckland restaurant Coco's Cantina is considering a name change after being accused of appropriating Latin culture.

It comes days after the eatery's co-founder accused a competitor of appropriation.

On Sunday, the Herald reported that Coco's Cantina co-founder Damaris Coulter had accused Auckland restaurateurs Tom Hishon and Josh Helm of appropriating the Māori word for king in their new Britomart restaurant.

Hishon and Helm - who own Orphans Kitchen - have always maintained the name kingi is a colloquial shortening for kingfish.

But in several heated Instagram comments, Coulter accuses Hishon of "ignoring" the concerns of Māori over the name.

Now, the restaurant Coulter founded with her sister Renee has received several accusations online the name Coco's Cantina is offensively appropriating Latin culture.

In response, Renee Coulter, posted on Instagram yesterday that they are having conversations about changing their name this week.

"One of the Kingi advisors [to Hishon and Helm] asked us to respond to his concerns around the name of our restaurant, as he and others find it offensive," she wrote.

"If our eatery name has ever offended anyone, we are deeply sorry, we have never intended to ever upset, offend or disrespect anyone, and it's important that we understand if we have."
