I love what Trump is doing. All the other robot candidates do whatever their sugar daddies want them to do, and spend their time asking for donations.

Trump doesn't have to do any of that shit, can fund his entire campaign, and has probably given more money to the other candidates in the past than most people.

Money buys politicians, and he's totally open about it. He'd be a horrible president, but he's shaking up the system from within the GOP and that's not a bad thing.

He wouldn't win the primary, but is making the other "legitimate" GOP candidates look like pussies and robots in front of their key voters.

Yeah, but it's staggering that he can make certain comments and his popularity goes up.
I know it means nothing when it comes to the actual voting, but I worry about the mind set of some in the US

Republicans choose Trump - they lose.
Republicans don't choose Trump, he runs as an independent - they still lose.

My bet is his support will quickly drop when he's not selected in the primary.

I think popular support is with Democrats regardless, but who knows how that'll turn out when churned through the Electoral College.

It may be my information bubble, but that's my sense from the left leaning trends that have some popular support at the moment. Various social justice movements, cannabis reform, anti-gun movements gaining more support, that sort of stuff. And the right leaning stuff is getting more and more extreme, which is really popular with some but surely unpalatable to the center.

But what does that have to do with how the Electoral College votes?

I don't know what you mean by that. I'm guessing you somehow differentiate between "popular support" and "popular vote". I didn't mean anything so sophisticated.

Yeah, I think it's a confusion of words? or levels of voting.

Each electoral college is like voting in NZ. The winner is the one with the most votes, but that person ends up with 100% of the votes available for that state. And because the US is effectively a 2 nomination election, then it stands to reason that whoever has the popular support in a state, will win those votes. *

But because they get 100% of the votes, then that can me nationally they can win without getting the popular vote.

(Assuming every states were identical) Democrats could win 24 states with a 99% to 1% majority, and Republicans could with 26 states with 51%-49% majority. So Republicans win with only 37% of the peoples vote.

Then add into the mix that states are different sizes, with California having 55 votes and texas having 38, and others only having 3 or 4. It could be possible for someone to win with only 20% of the peoples vote.

*Obviously if there is a third nominee then its possible that the one side wins a college but the state favours the other side

Trump is a moron, but it concerns me that a number of people in the US think he speaks to them and says what they're thinking.

A great proportion in the US are so overwhelmed by economic circumstances that there isn't really any time in the day to critically consider politics. Which is great for politicians like Trump for grabbing attention with simple, base rhetoric.
