citizenship

As you may or may not have noticed the Australian parliament is falling apart right now because all of a sudden it is apparent that a whole bunch of MPs failed to disclose foreign citizenship (or eligibility for foreign citizenship) before putting their hands up for election, which is a black-and-white no-no under Section 44 of the Australian Constitution.

So pop quiz: who here is a citizen (or entitled to citizenship) of where?

Ab 14th November 2017 14:38

Me: NZ by birth, Oz through time served

pxpx 14th November 2017 15:10

NZ by birth

crocos 14th November 2017 15:24

NZ by birth, Oz by birthright (Mum is from QLD). Even have expired passports for both nations.

xor 14th November 2017 15:30

NZ by birth. Currently hold a New Zealand and Irish passport.

I know they used to (my sister, who is not an Irish citizen although "me da" is Irish, got one when she was travelling to the UK) - I think things may have tightened up a bit, I seem to remember a news article suggesting that I would no longer be eligible, but I'm not 100% sure of the criteria.

Edit: Perhaps my sister became an Irish citizen?

xor 14th November 2017 16:00

Yep, i received mine about 16 years ago via my grandmother. Though, i would imagine things have tightened up a fair bit since then.

The ironic thing is she was born/raised in Northern Ireland.

Ab 14th November 2017 16:18

Surely that means you're entitled to Irish citizenship?

Lightspeed 14th November 2017 17:05

I'm stranded here. All my grandparents were NZ born, maternal great-grandmother came from England.

CCS 14th November 2017 17:16

Just NZ.

fixed_truth 14th November 2017 18:22

NZ by birth & eligible for British Citizenship by decent (Parental)

StN 14th November 2017 18:48

Full on Cantab only. Tracable back to the first four ships etc.

The kids on the other hand do get to visit Southland without a passport.

Savage 14th November 2017 19:10

Saffa by birth, NZ by citizenship, Aussie by time served (under the new rules).

Yeah, though i think i have to spend X days there before first. Or eat a potato/drink/etc. Pretty good thing to keep updated. Need to check what the process is about getting passports for my two boys also.

creamcheese 15th November 2017 11:54

NZ by birth, just started the US citizenship process a month ago.

Cyberbob 15th November 2017 16:35

NZ by birth, but my son was born stateless in Melbourne, so he only has NZ by descent. Should he knock someone up overseas, any grandkids won't be eligible for NZ citizenship.

madmaxii 15th November 2017 18:00

NZ by birth but have Irish citizenship and passport through my Grandfather

Same here, but the Great grandparents were scottish heritage

Ab 15th November 2017 18:58

I think my parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents are all NZ-born. Small question mark over my maternal grandmother's mother but I'd be very surprised if she were not NZ-born. I have to go at least 4 generations back before I find people I know were born outside NZ (England, Scotland, Denmark are the nearest... USA and more England a bit further)

edit, I was wrong. Paternal grandfather's mother, born Melbourne, Straya, 1877. Her parents born Hammersmith England and New York USA respectively.

CCS 15th November 2017 21:35

My father's side goes back 150 years here. My mum's side... I dunno, great-grandparents English or something. Does get me shit in the way of a passport though.

There are worse places to be stranded ;)

All my great-grandparents were born in England or Scotland and all flat-footed colonials since then.

Juju 16th November 2017 13:40

NZ. All of my ancestors came to NZ before the 20th Century. My kids won't be able to say that though, seen as their mum is English.
