The proximity sensor detects when you lift iPhone to your ear and immediately turns off the display to save power and prevent inadvertent touches until iPhone is moved away.

An ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the display’s brightness to the appropriate level for the current ambient light, thereby enhancing the user experience and saving power at the same time.

Simon 10th January 2007 10:37

I want a phone that makes and receives calls, sends and receives SMS, and has Bluetooth. I don't care about all that other gay shit.

BaM 10th January 2007 10:46

I still have an extremely basic Nokia (8910) which does the trick nicely, but if this means I don't have to cart a cellphone, ipod and PDA around then I'm in.

Waldo 10th January 2007 11:09

im with the other old bums, i sue my nokie 1110, (it has a torch on it ) and make phone calls.....

I already got that sorted with a Treo 650. admittedly only a 2GB sd card. but still means I can watch divx vids and have a couple albums of mp3's to listen to/watch on the train with bluetooth headphones.

and its a pda phone as well.

Mr M 10th January 2007 15:50

But it's sex in a phone. Look at how thin it is!!
And did I see correctly that it comes with Google Earth on it!?!? WHOOP!
But meh - 8GB max.....c'mon....
I wouldn't mind if it was a bit fatter and had a good 60GB....

Whiplash 10th January 2007 16:31

Mmyep, never really 'wanted' a phone before but ... yeh, I want one of these.

I expect by the time we actually see them here there will be more storage available as NVRAM capacities are going through the roof. It's not just size that's the issue - it's power consumption of NVRAM vs HDD.

P.S. Google Maps

Deff 10th January 2007 17:20

Won't be here for a long time. Cigular has exclusive multi year deal on it.

drake 10th January 2007 17:23

Google maps is the best , true , DOUBLE TRUE !

What about an address book :p ?

doppelgänger of someone 10th January 2007 17:50

I browse thru the whole iphone website and not ONE promise of being rugged. My current phone has been dropped not infrequently and got sat on so many times my butt cheek has an impression of the keypad. It is still working. Unless iphone is sofaking tough I'm not buying.

Simon 10th January 2007 17:58

Good luck finding an EDGE network in NZ to connect one to.

silva^ 10th January 2007 18:23

I think you all need to actually watch the keynote, rather than read the website and bitch and moan. The keynote will convert you.

If they're releasing in APD in 2008, I reckon it will be a 3G model. By then I'll definitely be in the market for a new phone and PDA.

TnT 10th January 2007 21:00

It's a Quad band phone yeah? GSM + Edge.

Looked pretty sleek...

BWDOWN 10th January 2007 21:55

Looks mint! but I cant see one in NZ for at least 2 years.

Ive got a Nokia N80 at the moment which is quad band, Edge, WiFi and GSM. More features which are more wanky than useful especially in NZ

Sure sounds like it, doesn't it??

plaz0r 11th January 2007 00:10

It's ... just a PDA with a built-in phone ... it's been done before hasn't it?

Yeah it's thin and looks pretty shiny, but meh ... everyone seems to be getting way too lubed up about it

Ard Righ 11th January 2007 07:11

Well, going by Apple's previous history, I would expect everyone to rush out and buy one as soon as they are released, then wait for a few weeks to start complaining about the screen bubbling or changing colour, the units overheating, and the batteries going dead etc :p

Apple did ok with the ipod because it was created for a market that largely didn't exist at the time. But as some tech commentators have already said - there are plenty of mobiles that cover just about everything this iPhone does, and the only bonus this thing has going for it, is the shiny Apple logo on the back of it.

I am not going to be in a great hurry to replace my current phone. But with the models Nokia and Sony are putting out now, it will be an interesting market come 2008.

Video of some of the features Jobs demonstrates

yem 11th January 2007 09:31

It'll be 3G by the time it gets here, no doubt. But..
- Can you install 3rd party or homebrew software for free and without carrier consent?
- Can you access the storage over wifi without a proprietary app like iTunes?
- Battery life. My 3G nokia needs a charge every 3 days at least - more if used heavily - and the functions would appear to be far less demanding than those of the iphone.
- Bandwidth - in 2008, for $1000+, it better have HSDPA.

It seems more like a next-gen nano that happens to make phone calls.

Mish 11th January 2007 09:37

I think a lot of you are missing the 'cool' in this.

I already have an iMate Jam:

While not as thin and while the touch screen/OS isn't designed for finger only operation to the extent that the new iPhone is, it covers most of the features of the iPhone.

So yes, while we have similar devices on the market this rocks my socks because:
  • An easier to use 'stylus-less' interface means it's more attractive to Joe n00b.
  • With Apple behind the interface it's a safe bet that it'll be more user friendly than the current range of Windows/Symbian based phones.
  • It's an attractive phone that will draw the masses (especially the iPod crowd).
  • It's pushing the Internet on a mobile angle.
All of these things rock my socks.

Together these things mean lower costs for cutting edge mobile technology, harder pushes by Nokia, etc to bring their (IMO outdated) user interfaces up to grade and more importantly, with the "Internet on mobile" push, we'll (hopefully) see mobile data charges come down across the board (in time).

You don't have to appreciate the aesthetics of the new case or the user friendly UI. You should however appreciate the fact that we now have a driving force in the mainstream consumer market that is pushing the latest in mobile convergence and mobile Internet.

Apple may not have the product you crave right now, but I'm betting if they don't, they'll be the push the rest of the industry needs to make it happen.

Only good things can come of this.

I just can't wait to see what an Iphone looks like after bouncing around in a bag with my car keys and a handful of change for an hour or so.

But your special iPhone Apple accessory protector will save it!

Well considering they haven't even got FCC approval for it as yet means that the US won't even see them until at least June... hence there not being any available on Ebay or Amazon (or anywhere).

But that was a no brainer right?

Yeah. I'd be too scared to take it anywhere really. A good cellphone will cop a fair amount of abuse, that thing I doubt it very much.

Simon 11th January 2007 12:12

Bottom line? I don't trust a phone designed in the USA for American users and American networks to NOT SUCK DONKEY BALLS. The US mobile phone industry is five years behind the rest of the world and has a history of retardedness in every respect. The only way I can see this device not sucking is if it isn't really a phone -- if, in spite of all the hype, it's really just another Ipod. A networkable Ipod that you can make phone calls on, yes, but still basically an Ipod.

Pop quiz: hands up who's looking forward to typing SMS on a touchscreen?

*crickets chirp

Rocket 11th January 2007 12:52

only poor people and cave dwelling nerds txt. And who really cares for them.

and anyway. the imate blows arse. and if the battery life on the iphone is the same then i wont touch it. how longs a battery going to last playing mp3s / talking on phone / browsing. about 2 hours.
