How many jobs have you had?

I will have been in IT for 10 years in March 04 and I will be starting my 7th different job in that time next month.

I think 7 different jobs in 10 years is not really a good thing, hopefully I will stay at the next one for at least a good 10 years or till I retire :)

Just wondering how many jobs others have had in their careers.

Cookie 30th December 2003 18:24

6 for me. In the space of about 3-4 years. Most of them were happening at the same time.

Unemployment sucks so much. I'd kill to be run off my feet again. :p

eff tee 30th December 2003 18:27

For me, 7 jobs in 17 years. One of those was for 8.5 years.

LordP 30th December 2003 18:29

I'm currently in my 7th job in 10 years, but two of them have been short term contract jobs lasting 2-4 weeks. Longest was 2.5 years.

I thought you were a uni student cookie?

MOOS CV:

Paper boy
Dog walker
Salesperson (for one day)
ESOL tutor
Uni tutor

Tutoring being by far the most remunerating. I was pulling down $30/hour down in Otago... (I had a friend tutoring groups of 1st years for $90 an hour.. wow) but I think the pickings won't be as ripe in welly :(

I'm also looking into the import/export market... I think I can make a shiteload of money if I'm lucky (I'm a full time student as well).

[BT]MikeMan 30th December 2003 18:34

3rd job in 10 and a bit years in the industry.

8 years at Continuum/CSC/HP (same job, you have to love buyouts.)

Flick 30th December 2003 18:46

I've had a total of 6 jobs in the past 8 years, but that's partly because I sometimes had two jobs at a time.

Asriel 30th December 2003 19:04

Pak n Save Deli assistant for one year.
Dishwasher at a restaurant for a year...and counting...
With any luck neither will be my future career.

Toksin 30th December 2003 19:25

Several part time jobs, now a full time job.

First job was a doorman/waiter at a restaurant back in South Africa.
Then I was an "Information Officer" at the Lower Hutt info centre from November 2001 to September 2003. During that time I was also a boat groomer for about a month, and a car groomer for a few months, up to September 03. HATED it.

Now since September I've been working fulltime as a sales coordinator...

LordP 30th December 2003 19:38

Make mine 8 jobs, just remembered the shortest job I've had - two days being pizza delivery boy for Eagle Boys in Ponsonby. I quit after the second day because getting paid at the equivalent of $6 / hour and ending up with two $40 parking tickets was too much.

VERT 30th December 2003 19:39

18 jobs in 13 years :D a lot of them have been short term or jobs while I had others.
longest 2 were 3 years each

Matt0r 30th December 2003 19:56

too many jobs, none i'd be proud to tell someone about.. met some odd/interesting/funny ppl tho..

Evoke 30th December 2003 19:58

8 jobs during 8 years

I make a point to not stay longer than a year

CCS 30th December 2003 20:01

Two jobs, just over 2 years each. STAYING POWAAARGH!

Ard Righ 30th December 2003 20:11

Is it just me, or is 7 jobs in 10 years not a bad average, judging by the current job market ?

I worked in a supermarket for 4.5 years (mainly part-time weekends while studying), and since then have had jobs for periods ranging for 3-6 months, and the previous job about 18 months, and the current one ongoing for 10 months.

I don't think a new job every 16 months is all that bad to be honest. You have to remember in this day of 'everyone for themselves', the era of life-long company loyalty was sold down the drain in the 90's.

LFC 30th December 2003 20:20

I think in IT, it is a good thing to have a few different jobs and see a few different network setups to get experience(if you are working for a pure IT company this wouldn't really be neccessary as you would see other companys networks anyway).

Another reason I have changed jobs is boredom, right now though I am sick of moving jobs and I want to make the next job a longterm one.

Reformed_Quint 30th December 2003 20:50

since i left school, ive had......8 different jobs.

painting and redecorating holiday homes in whangamataa.

worked for DOC, fixing up mountain bike trails and scenic trails etc.

joinery apprenticeship for a year, hated that.

trained and worked as a chef/kitchen hand/waiter, liked the chef part, but ultimatly got sick of it.

worked in forestry for 2 years, pruning, planting (which sucked more than i can articulate) and spot spraying (which was so good i cant think something poetic enough to give it justice).

worked for DOC again doing various things, large percentage of the time i was on the " save the kiwi project" at waikaremoana.

worked in a large scale bakery for 2 years, long hours, good pay, but boooooring.

uni.

peasant at a horrible place, am too ashamed to say where, can barely look myself in the mirror anymore, but it pays the bills....sigh.

The Edge 30th December 2003 22:57

Since entering the workforce in 1995:

One part time job (eight months)
Two full time jobs (one 3 years, the other 4.5 years).

sidbo 30th December 2003 23:02

I must be the exception here...

4 in 19 years.

1st one was the longest so far, a shade under 10 years. During that time though I worked in a number of different jobs within the company, and transferred locations twice.

Current one is coming up 6 years.

BoyWonder 31st December 2003 00:20

2 jobs - first one 4 yrs, current one 4.5 years and counting. I like being part of the furniture.

Invader Val 31st December 2003 00:36

Not counting Freelancing and Self-Employment?

12 jobs in 17 years, 14 of them years in CG of one kind or another .. in fact I remember when all this was DOS and I was the boss of Axident :D

Did I win?

Oh... if it's not counting that, then you can take one of my jobs off my list.

If we are counting that you can add about 30 to mine ... :D

FreddyK 31st December 2003 00:59

I can do one better than sidbo.

Im in the same job that I left college for nearly 20 years back. Im a weather forecaster for MetService and never thought I would be with the company this long. It was one of those, "I have no idea what I wanted to do, but the money's good" sort of decisions when I took the job. I guess I can call it a career now huh :)

I attribute the staying power of the job for me, down to its continued changing role as a public service. From the government department it was when I joined to its current state as an SOE, to the inevitable private sector it is to become. I've seen the change in technology reduce staff numbers to more than half from when I first joined. The funniest thing I find with this job, is advancement in technology has'nt really increased forecasting accurancy at all, but efficency has ten fold.

Hell I'll stop right their! Its starting to sound a little like my memoirs :)
