What stream(s) are people going to be following for the results?

Lightspeed 17th October 2020 19:33

Well, I'm watching the RNZ stream, seems aight. Looking very good for Labour, very bad for National. No mention of referendum results yet.

fixed_truth 17th October 2020 19:47

Jesus what a massacre. Also Auckland central

Lightspeed 17th October 2020 20:22

Very exciting. Brownlee getting reamed is lovely. Nick Smith too.

Lightspeed 17th October 2020 20:27

I really hope the Maori Party manage to get a seat. They're still just in reach with a couple of seats.

Agreed on Brownlee, not so much on Smith.

So so happy that Winston First looks toast.

I gave ACT my party vote this time around, and it looks like a lot of other people did too. On track for 10 seats right now.

I too am hoping that the Maori Party gets a seat, Rawiri Waititi taking Waiariki would be ace... but it's not looking likely.

National's getting thumped. Nice work Matthew Hooton.

Lightspeed 17th October 2020 21:01

Waiariki, 38%/13k counted, ~120 votes behind Labour.

Lightspeed 17th October 2020 21:02

Greens are obviously thrilled. Wonder what kind of deal they'll have with Labour. Labour won't want them in opposition. And just outright owe the Greens for their support in the past term.

Ab 17th October 2020 21:27

BTW: yes and yes on the referenda.

Lightspeed 17th October 2020 21:30

Waiariki very close!

smudge 17th October 2020 22:02

Pretty historic result.

Our non-politically interested, ms 21 was waiting outside for the polling station to open this morning. I wonder if the "not going to descend to the political point scoring of the past" new way, is something that gets the young people to stop thinking "they're both the same" and actually bother to vote. Will be interesting to see the stats.

Nothing 17th October 2020 23:11

Seems like Labour able to govern alone. Happy that we're keeping Jacinda. Happy Winston First is out. Bit bummed out that Labour doesn't need the Greens.

Ab 17th October 2020 23:19

jeez I think Waititi is going to take waiariki!

Lightspeed 17th October 2020 23:49

Looking very good! I guess we'll have to see what the special votes bring.

The negotiations between Labour and Green will be very interesting. Lots of considerations. I doubt Green will opt for opposition, but they'll be looking to keep themselves distinguished from Labour, avoid being a patsy.

I voted 3 votes green, 1 vote death.

Bye bye Winston.

My thoughts on the referendums

Just like my socket set in the garage, many of which I will never use.

Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Just like the No-Homo reform bill. Not making it compulsory.

Ab 18th October 2020 13:44

Tova sticks it to Jami-Lee Ross.

I cant see the Euthanasia bill not passing.
The cannabis bill, I wasn't so sure of, but considering how far the left went, its actually possible.

fixed_truth 19th October 2020 13:49

On newstalk zb heaps of the oldies are saying they saw the writing on the wall for National & so voted Labour to keep the Greens out.

StN 19th October 2020 13:59

Hmmm - how did that work out for them...

Unsurprising, really.

Because the govt better not touch their fucking money.

Nothing 19th October 2020 17:30

Honestly, I think a wealth tax would be a good thing. I just think that the Greens have been discussing a scary-low threshhold. A much better threshhold would be something like 3 - 5 million.

xor 19th October 2020 17:33

Thomas Pikkety wrote a dry but good book about capital and tax. Recommend++

I do not understand this. At all. National would have been a better choice.

A vote for ACT is a vote for invasion by feral bears.

Because their grand children growing up in a world less affected by climate change is thing they're unwilling to make any sacrifice for ::facepalm::

blynk 21st October 2020 15:57

I heard a good current theory by the political pundits the other day, which is a bit sad.

The likely outcome is that Labour will solidify themselves as centre. People who are left have a home in the Greens, and it means that National will have a harder time getting the centre voters.
Which means we won't get a lot of the things that Labour may have done last term but had NZF stopping them.

It makes sense, National started doing that with Key. They moved to the centre which meant Labour had to push left.

Ab 21st October 2020 19:22

Jacinda's instincts seem to be those of a moderate centrist leader. Personally I find it hard to tell her apart from John Key policy-wise.

Lightspeed 21st October 2020 19:54

The difference will be in the practice. Where pressure is applied, where it isn't.

National claimed a mandate even when they weren't given one, and were a bunch of bullying cunts, which had consequences beyond any specific policy. Labour have real a mandate, I don't expect the same from them.

The trick is for the Greens to find a way to position themselves in the way that gives themselves the most leverage to pursue their agenda. They're certainly in a much better position to do that than ACT.

bradman 23rd October 2020 22:12

hey Ab, didn't you have your tongue up key's ass not too long ago?? Pick a fkn lane.

Redneck 30th October 2020 14:02

End of Life Choice Referendum - 65.2% Yes, 33.8% No

Yay

Cannabis Referendum - 46.1% Yes, 53.1% No

Fuck this country

Lightspeed 30th October 2020 14:06

Seems like a good enough result to initiate reform. I expect that's what we'll see.

blynk 30th October 2020 14:06

So I hope the 1.2m that voted no to the cannabis referendum are willing to have greater prohibitions on Alcohol.

Maybe we need the laws to change that mean it is now a crime and you can be arrested if you are carrying more than a 6 pack of beer or 1 bottle of wine.

And definitely limit the number places that you can consume alcohol.

But Labour aren't likely to do anything. They are going to spend the term very central.

It is only 170k votes different. But I doubt the specials would be able to win by over 85k.

fixed_truth 30th October 2020 14:11

What a wasted opportunity.

Redneck 30th October 2020 14:14

What's super annoying is if they had never done the stupid referendum they could probably pass an even more liberal reform bill thanks to the Labour majority plus strong results from the Greens and ACT.

Actually thats a bad example. Because people voted no to that. So we should be outright banning alcohol
