NZ blue over redhead 'insult'
January 27, 2004

A group of red-headed New Zealand men have succeeded in their official complaints about a television commercial they said reinforced negative stereotypes, making life difficult for people with their hair colour.

The Advertising Standards Complaints Board upheld complaints about the commercial for a brand of rum called Coruba Ginja, saying it had "indeed caused serious offence to red-headed males in particular".
...
Although an unspecified number of red-haired men complained, the board quoted only a 21-year-old man identified as C Irwin, who said the commercial "is mocking people like myself in a nasty fashion".

He said, "The advertisement will add to the atmosphere of denigration that currently exists in New Zealand towards red-headed males and I am sick of dealing with the repercussions of such ill-thought out humour."
How lucky we all are to have the haven of free speech and liberal enlightenment that is the NZGames.com forums. Why, just yesterday Moo posted an example of this tolerance, when he felt secure enough to refer to a group of Pacific Islanders as "a bunch of niggers", and then defend it by saying:

I fear Mr Irwin is reinforcing the fiery ginga stereotype. Quick, poke him with a stick, and see what he does...

Having never seen a fire engine in a sack, I honestly couldn't answer that.

Wake 27th January 2004 11:39

Im semi ginga, I just defend it by saying strawberry blond :)

ChaosWulf 27th January 2004 11:46

Wake - yeah, me too :)

That said, I don't find "ginga" to be an insult either, its just amusing.
Course the Coruba in question is only supposed to offend red haired males :D

wugambino 27th January 2004 11:49

Axident 27th January 2004 12:25

I'm about as ginger as they come and what I find most offensive about that add is that anyone would go after a chick that looks like that. Jeeze, I mean she looks like a white drag-queen wearing shoe-polish!

Lightspeed 27th January 2004 12:25

I dunno... it seems the full on ginga males fit into the box we create for them quite nicely.

Whiplash 27th January 2004 12:29

Ok, so for those of us who don't watch TV - what happens in the ad?

Nahaz 27th January 2004 12:31

Insults always seem less of a big deal when they're not aimed at you.

Something like this I think...
Ginger guy and Ugly Jamaican lady sitting in the classroom and ginger guy starts to complain that girls don't like him 'cause he's ginger. Meanwhile she's not actually looking at him while he's talking and instead looking at the "Ginja" flavoured Coruba bottle and she proceeds to tell him she loves "Ginja", so he takes this as a sign that she likes gingers and goes to kiss her. She shakes him off and gets mad because she was talking about the drink.

Pretty much what the link says:
Quote:

The board's ruling said the advertisement showed a woman teacher enthusing about "Ginja", saying that "she likes it very much, that it is really different, popular with the ladies, and that she has a real thing for Ginja.

"The student inadvertently thinks that she is making complimentary comments about him (he has ginger hair). In his exuberance he romantically lunges towards his teacher. She reacts with shock and disdain, saying, 'Get your pale freckled hands off me!'" the board said.
Although 'Get your pale freckled hands off me!' is in a thick Carribean accent.

combatspoon 27th January 2004 13:07

Oh my god, holy shit ;-O

catharsis 27th January 2004 13:19

hah, so lame.
I've been called things all my life because I have red hair. I couldn't give a shit at all, I think it's pretty damn funny when people tease about it.
I tease myself more probably, I'm the first to crack wise when people ask if I want some 'Big Red' & I'm always on about the old red rat. pffft stupid munters , they really shouldn't care about this kind of petty insult.
