what is the limit in length/size of a string in php?

i have a form that mails off data into $message but before i apply html formatting to $message i want to ensure it can handle the content

applied the formatting and it seems to be fine.

would still like to know the answer

As long as the amount of memory on your server, or the PHP maximum memory per script usage limit (http://nz.php.net/manual/en/ini.core....memory-limit), whichever you hit first.
