Is Auckland ok?

Meanwhile in the third world

crocos 5th October 2014 14:51

Apparently Biggus is OK.

CCS 5th October 2014 15:19

Part of Auckland is not ok. I'm not particularly concerned about that part.

MadMax 5th October 2014 15:34

I hear having your house lit up by generator power during an outage makes for good neighbour trolling. People are awesome.

pxpx 5th October 2014 15:39

Can't access work VPN or any remote services so wondering if the office will be up and running. Newmarket office... would be sweet to have a day off from this!

leadinjector 5th October 2014 17:12

dragged my sorry hungover ass out of bed this morning to open the gym, but no dice. so went home napped and then had brekkie in pon snobby, so not a bad day.

some dude asked if we could open anyway despite, you know, not having any power. dedicated to the gainz.

The Edge 5th October 2014 18:11

No issues on the Shore. Out East is another story though.

Biggus 5th October 2014 18:39

Bah, power back on, normal life resumes...

pxpx 5th October 2014 21:41

yea dammit.. back to work in the morning :(

Cinclant 5th October 2014 22:53

05/10 never forget

crocos 5th October 2014 23:02

Never forget what?

xor 6th October 2014 11:20

The Peoples republic of Mangere were unaffected by this outage.

I have charcoal and a fireplace if there was an outage.

Omegakai 6th October 2014 11:35

didn't even know there was a power outage. west is best.

Lightspeed 6th October 2014 11:38

Just go into work for some sweet, sweet power. There's a shower here too I think. Been burning candles and reading The Knowledge, which is fitting.

Hopefully it's up in a day or too, laundry will be an issue soon.

smudge 6th October 2014 21:55

Sunday morning was quite surreal. Normally there's this constant hum from all the light commercial/industry down around Onehunga, sunday it was total absent. Then half of auckland being incredibly polite at lights out intersections, the other half being total arseholes. Realizing I need internet more than coffee...

BoyWonder 7th October 2014 00:00

Actually driving around at even substantial intersections like Mt Eden Rd and Balmoral Rd it was surprisingly courteous. Quicker trip around those areas than usual.

Long pig; the tastiest meat.

Lightspeed 8th October 2014 10:55

Apparently power is all restored, but the local cafe is still running off a generators, not sure what's up with that. Friend of a friend who worked on the substation (with but not for Vector) says that it wasn't surprising the fault occurred due to the substation construction, but that Vector managed to work some magic by getting things back up as quickly as they did.

See, not everyone is satisfied just sitting at home on their bum.

I'm sure an employment coach will sort them out, lolz.

This.

MadMax 8th August 2022 21:39

Just wait. Some dipshit is gonna lose an eye or their head and all this will quickly stop IMHO

Ab 8th August 2022 22:42

I am only just realising that ram-raids are like, a thing, in Auckland now.

Lightspeed 8th August 2022 22:51

Yeah, it's a meme. Plenty of people in NZ with nothing to lose, nothing to hope for picking it up.

Ab 30th August 2022 11:18

Hamilton really is just Auckland South now!

Ajax 30th August 2022 12:27

Ram raiding is a TikTok fad with the juvies. Bollard makers are calling this their Happy Time.

crocos 9th May 2023 13:10

Looks like the rains are back - have heard of people being sent home from their offices

StN 9th May 2023 13:55

FFS - caving. Who would ever think this is a good idea for school kids when rains are due? Did they not watch the Netflix docudrama about the soccer team that gave my claustrophobic self the willies? And Elon and peadoguy?

Lightspeed 9th May 2023 15:06

Fucked up situation, for sure.

wazza 9th May 2023 15:49

i just got home, google maps said "47mins earlier than predicted"
for shame i ignored the motorways, went some elaborate far out way i have never been before using main roads and side streets, barely hit traffic to be fair.. maybe 3 or 4 3-5min queues, pretty decent.

some people are looking at 2-3hour journeys

Drive from Wiri to Mt Wellington, Google maps said 21 mins yeah right! I thought Goggle Maps must be broken.

So from when I drove out of the carpark at 5:45pm in Wiri to my home in Mt Wellington it took me 16 minutes, here is the kicker I was driving pretty much 80K on the motorway to the Mt Wellington off ramp. Go figure.

Met service can't predict crap, I think I had the wipers on wiping every 5 seconds didn't see any of the "70mm of rain from 5pm to 7 pm" prediction.

Ok, I guess that is more recent and relates to caves, but we have a big tragedy on our own shores only 15 years ago with the Elim school river drownings.

Sure every single school outing that would have some form of river/water system would have a clear rule of "CHECK THE FUCKING WEATHER"

Ab 10th May 2023 12:24

What an awful situation. I personally cannot imagine how "caving" and "heavy rain" could go together.

It is Whangarei Boys High. I can't imagine the grim day-to-day of getting kids through the system.

It sounds like a dynamic situation being forced upon the box-ticking exercise that education is, with tragic results.

Thought exactly the same thing, felt like a shit for thinking it.

StN 10th May 2023 14:49

In days of yore, it was death by misadventure. A tragedy to be sure, and Worksafe will have the clipboards out.

The trip went ahead despite the region being under an orange heavy rain warning; a state where MetService says “people need to be prepared and take action as appropriate as there could be some disruption to their day and potential risk to people, animals and property”.

Yesterday, that included a forecast 90mm of rain. One parent said it had been an “absolutely insane” decision for the trip into the caves to go ahead.

The large sign near the caves features a map of the area, the cave history and, under the heading “Quick facts”, outlines flooding risks.

“The caves can fill with water to more than waist deep on an adult,” it reads.

“Always check the previous week’s rainfall and current weather forecast before entering.

“The Ivy Cave is particularly prone to flooding and caves can fill with water quite rapidly.”

The warning of the perils of visiting after heavy rainfall also features on a page on the Whangārei District Council’s website about Abbey Caves.

Yikes.
