In the words of a detransitioner,

Quote:

I hear frequently that I am meant to take “personal responsibility” for my decision to transition, particularly because I was an adult. This is my take on the situation: I became completely convinced about something that was ultimately untrue. It was a delusional belief. I brought that belief to health professionals who had been taught that it was kinder to affirm the belief than to question it.

https://somenuanceplease.substack.co...razy-the-whole

Lightspeed 25th August 2022 15:03

Yeah, I frequently hear demands for "personal responsibility" when clearly people are being impacted forces greater than themselves.

Usually the demand is made to justify denying access to resources.

fixed_truth 25th August 2022 15:38

I don't mind the criteria to continually be tweaked based on evidence. But conservative framing aside, 'there is an extremely low prevalence of regret in transgender patients after GAS.

Ab 25th August 2022 16:32

That is historically true, because historically Gender Affirmation Surgery (GAS) was performed on a very very small number of patients who were almost all adult males who had made an adult choice to live as women. They made their choice and accepted it.

Lately, however, the patients are overwhelmingly young women and girls. Irreversible surgery is being performed on girls in their teens. Those patients are by default not capable of making decisions about their health.

What's even worse: to get data on whether or not people regret or attempt to ameliorate their surgery in later life, you have to keep records of who received what surgery when and follow them up later. In the case of the recently-closed-down Tavistock centre in the UK, no such records were kept. Such was the religious fervour of the staff there, they were too busy performing surgeries on girls to keep records.

fixed_truth 25th August 2022 18:51

Where are you getting your surgery statistics if there were no records?

Ab 25th August 2022 19:46

As you can tell from the words that I typed, the sentences about Tavistock are specifically about Tavistock. You can find the “wtf do you mean they didn’t keep records” revelations in the Cass Interim Report:

https://cass.independent-review.uk/p...nterim-report/

For an example of surgeries being performed on teenage girls I could point to somewhere like Boston Children’s Hospital, which is so convinced of the righteousness of its cause that it literally advertises a “15 or over? No parent consent required” policy on its website like a payday loan shark:

https://www.childrenshospital.org/tr...reconstruction

Lightspeed 25th August 2022 19:50

I'm totally sure things are well under the Tories in the UK, Boris and his crew are doing a bang-up job. The Tavistock centre closing and the circumstances that led up to that was in no way just one more neolib shit-show as providers attempt to respond to growing need with reduced resources in ever more complex environments. Surely, right?

The story about rampant sex-changers is definitely the best fit of all the facts at hand!

Surgery is never the first step in a gender transition. It is something that happens after you have already explored social and medical transition options. People who choose to undergo surgery usually do so after taking other steps in the gender affirmation process, such as taking supplemental hormones.
Quote:

The clinicians in the Center for Gender Surgery at Boston Children's Hospital offer chest reconstruction surgery as a gender affirmation procedure to eligible patients who have documented and persistent gender dysphoria and who are over age 18 (or over age 15 with parental consent).
Quote:

To qualify for gender affirmation at Boston Children's Hospital, you must be at least 18 years old for phalloplasty or metoidioplasty and for vaginoplasty.

You must also have the following:

A letter from a medical doctor or nurse practitioner stating that you have "persistent, well documented, gender dysphoria" and specifying the length of hormone therapy.
A letter from your regular therapist stating that you have "persistent, well documented, gender dysphoria," that any significant mental health concerns are well controlled and that you have been living full time in your identified gender for at least 12 months.
A second letter, from a mental health professional familiar with the procedure you are seeking, stating you are ready for surgery. This should include your understanding of the surgery procedure and recovery needs, fertility implications of surgery, and risks of surgery. It should also state that you are able to consent for surgery and include an assessment of your support systems.
Quote:

Patients who want to pursue chest surgery must be at least 15 years old and have the following:

A letter from a medical doctor or nurse practitioner stating that you have "persistent, well documented, gender dysphoria" and specifying either the length of hormone therapy or why you are not taking hormone therapy.
A letter from a mental health provider stating that you have the capacity to consent and that any significant mental health issues are being addressed.

Another moment of sanity, this time closer to home:

Boxing NZ to create open category for transgender fighters

Quote:

"Our priority first and foremost is the safety of competitors in our sport, all competitors, regardless of any sexual persuasion or gender preference," Boxing NZ president Steve Hartley said.

"There is potential for injury or worse if the margins of safety are breached. This is why boxing has sex specific, age specific and weight specific categories to maximise the inclusion of as many people as possible in this great sport, while also prioritising safe and fair competition for all."

Masked representatives of the anonymous group Pissed Off Trannies (POT) ceremonially delivered the urine to the EHRC offices in Westminster, London and staged what they described as a “piss-in”.

One member pissed herself in her bejewelled gown, before pouring bottles of urine on herself.

Left eats itself, episode 496627:

Quote:

Just one year after its partial meltdown during the 2021 federal election, the Green Party of Canada is once again in crisis over an incident of “misgendering.”

It all started at a Sept. 3 media event in Vancouver kicking off the party’s leadership contest. In a Zoom appearance, Interim Leader Amita Kuttner was identified using a caption bearing the pronouns “she/elle.”

Kuttner, 32, identifies as non-binary and pansexual (attracted to all genders and orientations), and goes by they/them pronouns. In a subsequent statement, Kuttner slammed the “misgendering,” saying the incident “made me feel hurt and isolated” and hinted that it was “reflective of a larger pattern of behaviours that a few in the party are perpetuating.”

The statement added, “in moments like these I wonder — how can I ensure other people’s safety if I can’t even ensure my own?”

https://nationalpost.com/news/politi...enewed-turmoil

We’re so lucky that climate and the environment and equality aren’t important issues any more, because if that were the case humanity would really need a strong worldwide Green movement, and having it be a bunch of selfish chatroom mods competing for oppression points would be a disaster. Whew.

That's just wishes and tears. We're not getting any magic movement of people to rescue us from who we are, what we're about. This is work we all have to do.

I've tried to listen to ContraPoints before, but I can't stand their presentation - which includes their voice and their visuals. I'm sure it was a great clip, but I had to skip that one. I enjoyed the White Man Behind a Desk, and he had me right up until he told me what I "had to do", and I was like "nah, fuck off". If trans are free to be "who they are", then I'm free to be a bigot that doesn't want to give them special treatment, and they can get by without taxpayer funding like everyone else, and just enjoy roads and a fire service like the rest of us. I like small government, not virtue signalling handouts for minorities to win votes.

Jon Stewart interviewing Leslie Rutledge, Arkansas Attorney General, about why her state banned gender-affirming care for minors

Ab 9th October 2022 09:02

How are the mighty fallen. Stewart used to be a voice of reason; now he’s a science-denying cultist.

fixed_truth 9th October 2022 10:24

Jon Stewart: calmly dismantles illogical conservative health care restrictions

Transphobics: omg science denying cultist!?!?

Ab 9th October 2022 11:47

That wasn’t calm, that was a Twitter bitch snarking for likes.

Hope nobody tells him that as of last month the NZ Ministry of Health doesn’t consider puberty-blocker drugs to be safe and reversible.

The “illogical conservative” position that Stewart is snarking about is the scientific one. What Stewart’s interlocutor is expressing - admittedly clumsily - is the position supported by the scientific research. She may be a fundie Christian but that doesn’t mean the science isn’t on her side.

There is no clear evidence that the treatments in question are either necessary or safe, and a lot of evidence that they’re not. Stewart appears to be ignorant of that fact, which is weird considering it’s the subject of the “interview”.

Lightspeed 9th October 2022 12:38

The issue is more complex than could be presented in that format, I don't think it was very helpful as a result. It was too combative, too one side or the other.

It looks like just another tribal battle. But there's no winning here. Plenty of people losing. But no winning. And we're definitely not closing this Pandora's Box, short implementing fascism.

Stewart's position appeared to be that those whose job it is to determine such things do believe there is place for these treatments and that the Arkansas government was placing itself above those institutions, denying its constituents freedom of choice.

Agreed. But it certainly wasn't an interview; it was Jon Stewart displaying his religious fervour in order to get affirmationclicks from his tribe (woke white Americans on twitter). This was a tribal display from an American about an American political issue in order to get attention from other Americans.

Stewart's position appeared to be that the state government of Arkansas are a bunch of bible-bashing hillbillies trying to force their religious fervour on their citizens, and their religious fervour is the bad kind.

As to the American institutions of which Stewart seems so enamoured - ask any other state in the Western world if they're following their guidelines and the answer is LOL FUCK NO.

That's straight up fake news, of which the transphobic crowd rely on.

Quote:

The Ministry of Health is reiterating puberty blockers are safe and reversible for young people wanting to halt potentially unwanted physical changes, after minor changes on its website led anti-trans groups to claim its position on the medicine had changed.

“While puberty blockers are currently considered safe, all treatments have risks and benefits,” the ministry said in a statement.

It endorsed guidelines from the Professional Association for Transgender Health Aotearoa (PATHA), which state: “Puberty blockers are considered to be fully reversible and allow the adolescent time prior to making a decision on starting hormone therapy.”

The changes were an effort to make it clear the ministry was not providing specific clinical advice for patients, as the suitability of any treatment should be assessed by a clinician, it said. “The use of any medicine or treatment is a matter for discussion between them and their patient.”
Puberty blockers still considered safe and reversible, health ministry says
