Twitter purge

Per Wapo:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/techn...ter-elon-musk/

Elon has assumed control of Twitter and has fired the CEO, CFO, and head of legal policy with immediate effect.

_indigo1 28th October 2022 14:08

Paywall fail.

Lightspeed 28th October 2022 14:34

I wonder how Twitter employees who took stock options feel about losing their shares. It will be a windfall in the short term, and the long term if Musk tanks the company. But some could have been counting on long term gains.

Lotsa people getting paid right now tho.

Know me. 28th October 2022 15:11

Getting paid twice what they're worth. Laughing all the way to the bank.

Musk's offer was $54.20 per share, the current price of TWTR is $53.70 per share.

Caesar 28th October 2022 18:03

I'm guessing he'll let Trump back on, that will be fun for sure.
And all the other hate groups possibly?

Lightspeed 28th October 2022 18:07

Maybe, but everyone who invested in the alt platforms might not be happy with that.

Not really following the news and the share, but would you not be taking it as the price of shares before he made the announcement? with the assumption that if he didn't buy it, it might be a similar price

Ab 28th October 2022 22:36

Musk made his offer April 14, when shares were $45.

Lightspeed 29th October 2022 17:25

Looks like there was more than one stunt where people faked being fired Twitter staff by walking around the offices with a box, talking to reporters.

On 10/29/2022, the Santa Monica Observer produced a story that was shared on Twitter by Elon Musk called “The Awful Truth: Paul Pelosi Was on Drugs And In a Dispute With a Male Prostitute Friday Morning.” The story appears to be fake and defamatory. At this writing on 10/30/2022, the website is no longer accessible.
Free speech! But deleted of course as it's really just disinformation fodder for maga idiots.

xor 31st October 2022 09:29

Twitter isn't real life.

It wasn't FOR maga idiots. It was to smear maga idiots.

Wayback Machine FTW

fixed_truth 31st October 2022 10:57

Musk shared a conspiracy theory that Paul Pelosi was on drugs and in a dispute with a male prostitute.

That's a crazy maga narrative. It doesn't smear these people retweeting & liking what Musk posted, they gladly ate it up.

Nich 31st October 2022 11:54

think more meta, more macro.

The fact that they ate it up is how you smear them. It's one more data point to demonstrate how a group (maga idiots) is completely lost because of their ideology.

fixed_truth 31st October 2022 12:23

So to recap. Conservative economic ruling class big wig Musk baits maga into a conspiracy theory in order to further the narrative that they're looney.

Nich 31st October 2022 12:26

you missed the most important context: "a week out from mid-terms"

Ab 4th November 2022 15:25

All Twitter employees sent home; those at home told to stay there; those in-transit told to turn around; doors locked.

I think Darth Elon is about to bring peace to the Empire.

update: 3500 people are finding out they're jobless by getting kicked one by one from the company Slack

I thought of you Ab: Tweet

Masto Stats I have no idea how accurate this is. Grain of salt etc.

6,029,623 accounts
+5,443 in the last hour
+91,887 in the last day
+284,521 in the last week

Compared to Oct 27

5,639,162 accounts
+144 in the last hour
+4,215 in the last day
+18,472 in the last week

The active user count is a lot less. If a small percentage stick once twitter settles down that would still be a bonus for the network.

Ab 7th November 2022 10:56

Mastodon is still a million times too complex for normies.

Ab 7th November 2022 11:04

Rumours that Twitter HQ is asking a lot of laid-off workers to come back. Shitshow.

Lightspeed 7th November 2022 12:07

Good enough rumour to be on the local news this morning!

sidbo 7th November 2022 13:29

Please check your spam folder for the potential re-hiring email.

Lightspeed 7th November 2022 15:42

Would you renegotiate terms? I imagine some will be in a position to name terms, others will be glad they can keep making mortgage payments.

_indigo1 8th November 2022 10:45

Elon trashing Twitters moderation defences really feels like a genuine national security issue right before their midterms.
As intellectual as his online caricature is, did he just boneheadedly fail to acknowledge the threat of Russian interference coming into a politically sensitive time for them?

Ab 8th November 2022 10:48

Yep.

Lightspeed 8th November 2022 12:39

Musk, who said Twitter needed to be politically neutral, endorses Republicans in midterms

Ab 8th November 2022 13:50

This just seems like an absolute trainwreck disaster. Has there ever been a more chaotic and value-destroying company acquisition?

Know me. 8th November 2022 13:59

Twitter or Tesla?

fixed_truth 8th November 2022 14:18

I think it'll be one of those situations where just when you think it couldn't get worse, it will get worse.

Lightspeed 8th November 2022 14:40

Well, I definitely think it can get worse. Twitter still has powerful momentum that can be exploited, even if its fate is ultimately terminal.

There are so many potential scenarios in the mix right now. The results of the midterms will set the stage for what's likely and possible.

_indigo1 8th November 2022 16:06

I can just imagine Putin sitting in his office, greasing his mits ala Mr. Burns.

I've been thinking the same. What comes to mind are instances where the value was destroyed post acquisition but not necessarily as a direct result of the acquisition. Yahoo buying Geocities, Microsoft buying Motorola, Whoever bought Lycos Search just before Google became a thing.

In the gaming scene, EA buying Westwood and Activision buying Blizzard come to mind.

_indigo1 8th November 2022 16:33

I applaud anything that erodes the corporate controlled internet - I don't like being a digital serf.
Being a digital nomad back in the 90's to pre-2010ish was much better.

But it happening before there is something better that can take up the vacuum is dangerous.

Lots of tech companies have been bought and were then allowed to wither, or were starved. Yahoo/Tumblr, News/Myspace come to mind as well as those you mention. But what's happening now seems to be the new owner trying to deliberately destroy the purchased company. IDGI.

Lightspeed 8th November 2022 17:24

Maybe they got some crazy quantum computer that tells them if they perform this series of convoluted moves, they'll get all the things?

_indigo1 8th November 2022 17:24

Simplest explanation is Elon is John Titor.
