I probably don't really know what free speech is to be honest. It seems one of those US-centric ideas from a couple of hundred years ago that we're all supposed to have bought into.

I was thinking about the idea that if everyone is free to share their ideas and values, those that are without merit will be exposed and die, rather than festering in the dark while allowing what works to flourish. Or something.

I don't really understand if the medium is the message. Facebook is the message? Social media is the message?

Yep. Twitter seem to still think they're managing a communications network which is, errr, concerning.

The problem I have with the idea this thread purports is that everything that is fucked up was fucked up before social media. Sure, social media enables a lot that previously was difficult. But that's across the board. Whether it's psychopaths, SJWs or nihilists, the compassionate, concerned or insightful, we all enjoy the same advantages social media brings.

Making out that the fucked up shit we're able to see that was previously obscured is a problem of social media makes it seems like the solution is to fix social media. The absurdity of which we're on commenting right now.

The problem is the grim shit that's been going on forever. The powerful acting powerfully and the weak identifying with the aggressor.

The Nazis didn't need no social media to get their groove on. What were the ingredients back then? A desperate situation to feed resentment and the willingness to put in more work than those who would oppose them?

The Nazis are literally credited with the first ever mass media spectacle (the Berlin Olympics) - they "got their groove on" as you so eloquently put it, by utilising new communications media of the time (TV). They spread their propaganda and leveraged a lack of media literacy in the new formats. They solidified this with more traditional formats of radio (which had wider reach but less impact) and print to capture a wider section of the population. Media, particularly new media (for the time), we absolutely critical in their ability to build support.

Is any of this sounding at all similar to some of the situations we are seeing now?
