'Bulls**t of the highest order': Why Mark Zuckerberg doesn't want to talk about 'shadow profiles'

I haven't noticed this covered in this thread yet... but... yeah... that's fucked.

Nich 13th April 2018 11:04

Super fucked, it's hard to know how to defend against this unless you're constantly behind a VPN, and methodically delete any Facebook cookies and ransomware (yes, I believe that is the correct label) that self-install when you visit ANY website.

I reckon Linkedin does this also. Some of it's suggested connections were not professional relationships at all, and it could only have known if it went through my emails.

Funny watching other companies take preemptive action on this issue. Apple updated iOS and the message is a big "We value your privacy!". Ok.

Also here's some that I have explored. Of course, they will get better with more users and content, but for now I use Riot for private messaging.

Blockchain messaging:

considering this all relates to identity, and our unshakable perception that our identity belongs to the individual. with the current systems in place, it is debatable who owns a citizen's identity, or even if national identity should exist. Either way, there has to be a better way to provide proof of identity.

People are wondering what the "killer app" will be for blockchain... it's digital identity:

Fuck that. I want anonymity. Which despite my best efforts I have given up, gradually, by leaving a trail of jigsaw pieces that can be used to create "a" picture.

China is implementing some next-level shit:
‘Forget the Facebook leak’: China is mining data directly from workers’ brains on an industrial scale

This, combined with China's "Social Credit" system (aka Black-Mirror Nosedive episode) .... how is this different from slavery?

Nich 2nd May 2018 14:34

Now this is a good idea:
https://www.theguardian.com/commenti...tax-regulation

One slight change I would suggest if you actually want people to think they can benefit from it: Change the word "data tax" to "data dividend"

In a way, this is what Basic Attention Token promises. https://basicattentiontoken.org/ . If you value my eyeballs, then you will pay me.

This pretty much aligns with my experiences of teaching media literary and critical thinking. We do currently have a bit of a moral panic about the idea of echo chambers.

Jeff Deist: Alex Jones’ Ban and Political Correctness
https://youtu.be/c47ZZccDMpU

In light of Alex Jones getting "banned in every hole",
In light of Julian Assange being extradited to become Chelsae Manning V2.0,
the social media government complex has delivered its message loud and clear:
Only politically correct speech may get a platform in the public sphere.

It's not ok to publicly question authority and the majority agenda.
Keep it to yourself, be sensitive of other people's feelings.
Eventually the only public voice will be that which is signed and approved by Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, et al.
People who think differently may convince themselves that no one shares their ideas or questions. They may self-censor and try to fit in.

Nich 11th August 2018 21:30

In a way John Oliver and all those funny news shows set the table for the public to accept the removal of Alex Jones. Not only accept it, but cheer it on.

John Oliver is happy to play the "I am just a comedian, don't take me seriously!" But Alex Jones can't say "What I do is performance art." ?

Comedy is now weaponized propaganda for the state
https://www.bitchute.com/video/OmzTms48Nus/

It's been like this, night after night, for over 2 years. You could say "turn off the channel if you don't like it..." Yes, but you can't turn it off when your friends and loved ones casually repeat these insane talking points. And if you present a counter argument, people think you're picking a fight. Too much soy in everyone's diet!

Ab 13th August 2018 00:27

I dont know anyone who watches those shows and I hadn’t heard that joke.

Lightspeed 13th August 2018 00:46

So what was Jon Stewart? When he retired that's about when I stopped watching political comedy.

I have seen some John Oliver, and he's always been open about the satirical and comedic nature of aspects of his shows, his genuine views and opinions apparent. But still, I found too heavy handed for me. I can't put my finger on what I enjoyed more about Stewart. Less serious, less intensity, better delivery?

I've only seen a handful of clip of Alex Jones. From what I've seen is he presents himself as completely authentic, but that might just be careful editing.

Lightspeed 13th August 2018 00:49

I wonder with Stewart, he was presenting genuine content rather than content canned for mass distribution and repetition?

he appears to present himself as authentic; the "performance art" stuff started coming out when he was losing custody in his divorce hearing

source : JRE and random internet rumors (the JRE where he got real drunk and started talking about interdimentional space vampires was pretty great)

i definitely also miss jon Stewart; hung in with the new daily show for about 2 weeks; full frontal with Samantha bee is wayyy too heavy handed/far left leaning and jon Olivier but i find him more entertaining than informative

The Daily Show did have good content, and it wasn't polished, and yeah maybe it was genuine response to a world gone mad after 9/11. People did start going to Stewart for "unfiltered" news, which is probably the point where lightbulbs went on above a few TV execs heads. In a way, comedians have a way of removing all the noise and telling it how it is (ie Bill Burr)

Remember when Obama got elected? Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart were on air when it was announced that he won. They were in tears thinking it was the dawn of a better world. Then in the first week of the Daily Show after Obama got in, Jon Stewart was saying "I don't know how we can keep this show going with Obama as our president. There's no jokes."

And there it is. Obama was the untouchable darling who kept guantanamo open, loved drone warfare, wanted stricter policies on illegal immigrants, etc etc etc. Well, there's definitely no jokes there when the realisation sets in that it doesn't matter who you vote for, you get the same result.

There's something about the dynamic of free speech and how it doesn't work like it used to in this. Facebook is a home for the ideas and views that once would have died on the streets when exposed to the light of day.
